Monte Ward's plaque in Cooperstown reads as follows: "Pitching pioneer who won 158, lost 102 games in seven years. Pitched perfect game for Providence of N.L. in 1880. Turned to shortstop and made 2,151 hits. Managed New York and Brooklyn in N.L. President of Boston, N.L. 1911–1912. Played important part in establishing modern organized baseball."
Yet this inscription only tells half of the story. John Montgomery Ward was one of the most accomplished and popular baseball players of the nineteenth century. He also authored one of the first and still best-regarded primers on baseball, How to Become a Player, in 1888. But perhaps his most lasting contribution was his effort in forming first the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players, a precursor of today's Major League Players Association, and then the Player's League, a separate league set up to challenge the owners of the National League, who ran professional baseball. Although during his lifetime he was unable to overcome the reserve clause, which in effect bound a player to his team for life, his efforts would, ultimately three quarters of a century later, result in the end of the reserve clause and the free-agency system of present-day baseball. After his playing days were over, Ward attained degrees from Columbia University in Philosophy and Law and after his playing days became a successful Manhattan attorney.
Acclaimed to be one of the first curveball pitchers,Ward's career 2.10 ERA is fourth-best in baseball history. When his arm gave out, he moved to shortstop and posted some impressive offensive statistics: 2,123 lifetime hits, 504 stolen bases and a .278 batting average. Like Babe Ruth and Cy Seymour, Ward was both an able pitcher and talented batsman. Ward pounded out 2,151 hits to go with his 164 total victories, had a lifetime batting average of .275, and scored over 1400 runs. He is the ONLY player ever to amass 150 wins as a pitcher and 2,000 hits as a batter. In 1964 he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame.

*Tip O'Neill played his rookie year with Ward in 1883 on the Giants as a pitcher. He holds the second highest single season batting average in baseball history with .435 in 1887. He is one of only two Triple Crown Winners not to be in the Hall of Fame. The other is Paul Hines, who ironically accomplished the feat as a teammate of Ward's with Providence in 1878!
This card is 122 years old and undoubtably a rare piece of American Sports history. The front has sharp crisp color and among the most iconic cards of the 19th century. The back also shows no paper loss despite many fans' desire to keep this card in a place of honor in scrap books. This N28 Allen & Ginter card is Crease Free and would absolutely be a key addition to any baseball fan's collection.
