Auction Lister's Item Description
This is an 1887 Allen & Ginter baseball card of the Detroit Wolverines star catcher Charlie Bennett.  Bennett was widely considered the greatest catcher of the 1800's (until Buck Ewing came along) which explains his inclusion as one of the 10 baseball players in this very popular set.  (Along with such baseball luminaries as Cap Anson, John Clarkson, Charles Comiskey, Tim Keefe, King Kelly, Monte Ward, R. L. Caruthers, John Glasscock and Joe Mulvey.)  However, Bennett's baseball career was cut short when both his legs were cut off in a train accident in 1893.   This did not stop the Detroit Tigers from naming their first stadium "Bennett Park" in his honor, however.  He also threw out the 1st pitch at every Tigers Opening day Game from 1901 until his death in 1927.  Widely credited with inventing the first chest protector.  Also played for the Milwaukee Greys, Worcester Ruby Legs and Boston Beaneaters.  Just a great card of one of baseball's first superstars.  See scan for condition.  Reverse has pencil marks next to some of the names like it was used for a checklist.  Other photos, cards and tickets of Charlie Bennett are not included in this auction.  Only the 1887 Allen & Ginter baseball card.  High bidder to add $4.00 S/H and payment expected within 7 days of auction end.  Thanks for looking!
